Archer achieves piloted CTOL flight of electric Midnight aircraft

Archer (NYSE: ACHR) successfully demonstrated a piloted test flight of its eVTOL aircraft in CTOL (conventional takeoff and landing) mode, soaring over 1,500 feet and cruising up to 125 mph.

During the design and certification phases, Archer, along with government regulators and its clients from both civil and defense sectors, recognized the significance of being able to perform both vertical and conventional take-off and landing as integral to the aircraft’s routine operations, as CTOL offers operational versatility and improved safety.

Besides the practical use and importance of being able to operate in a CTOL mode, Archer is utilizing the opportunity in this historic test demonstration to test the Midnight’s landing gear and related components. Operating as a CTOL requires the Midnight to have an improved durability in its design compared to solely VTOL landing gear, as well as increased complexity.

The test flight was conducted by Archer’s Chief Test Pilot, Jeff Greenwood, who became part of the company in 2021. He has provided essential insights while concentrating on cockpit design, which includes the selection of vendors for the display and other equipment.

Prior to his tenure at Archer, Greenwood worked as a test pilot for Bell Textron, where he contributed to the development, testing, and certification of leading rotorcraft in the industry. A seasoned veteran, Greenwood served as a pilot in the United States Marine Corps for 13 years. Throughout his service, he cultivated his enthusiasm for test piloting and graduated from the United States Naval Test Pilot School.
